BOOKOO MINI SCALES

The Greatest Mini-Scales Ever Built?

BENJAMIN SAND

We all heard the mic drop when Lance Hendrick reviewed these scales. The internet went absolutely postal in response, and production was ramped up hard. I managed to snag a scale a few weeks later, and had had it for over 6 months now.

In short, it's the best travel scale I have ever used, for it's size and how damn clean it looks. There are some kinks, but nothing is perfect.

For me, I keep it in my backpack at all times. The feeling of waking up in a hotel room, knowing I have a responsive, USB-C powered scale that can rock my morning coffee weights down to the 0.1 decimal, make sure I can do a pourover or AeroPress in my room, or on a balcony, and take up no more room than a pack of cards.

No, this thing is a beauty. It's also built really solidly, so I don't feel worried it's going to break. The carry-case protects it for the actual travel days, but the rest of the time it can happily sit on a table and is always ready for action. I cannot tell you the amount of times people have commented on how cool the scale looks, and how small it is.

Below are the pro's and con's of this product:

Who is BOOKOO?

BOOKOO is an innovative brand dedicated to reimagining the coffee experience through modern design and reliable functionality. Known for their fresh approach to portable coffee gear, they are steadily building a reputation for creating tools that combine simplicity with smart engineering. BOOKOO products are designed for coffee lovers who value both performance and style, making them a brand to watch as they continue to grow and inspire.

Competitors

It sits between the cheaper end of the scale (pun intended), where quality really starts to feel cheap, and the higher end Acaia that really take a massive bite out of your wallet. The question for most people will be, is the Acaia worth the extra layout, and can you deal with the cheaper options on a day-to-day basis?

For me, the Acaia doesn't offer enough to justify the almost $150 jump in price, and the cheaper options such as the Wacaco, gave me response issues and overall build quality worries.

In short, the Bookoo has it all.

Popl Burger offers crispy, well-seasoned fries that stand out. However, the burger itself lacks the expected finesse, with a patty that feels underwhelming. Despite the fries, the overall experience doesn't quite meet the high expectations.

The Positives

Precision & Accuracy: Offers 0.1g measurement increments and a 0.1g/s flow rate, ensuring precise dosing and extraction monitoring.

Smart Connectivity: Features Bluetooth integration with apps like Bookoo, Beanconqueror, Odyssey Espresso, and Decent Espresso Machine for real-time data and OTA updates.

Compact Design: Measuring 8cm x 8cm x 1.5cm with a silicone mat, it fits perfectly in most espresso machine drip trays.

Long Battery Life: The 500mAh rechargeable battery provides up to 24 hours of use per charge, lasting 1-2 months between charges.

Easy Maintenance: Designed with IPX4 water resistance for easy cleaning—simply wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent.

The Negatives

Learning Curve:  A steep learning curve due to the scale's advanced features and app interface. The bluetooth can be a bit glitchy.

Size Limitations:  The compact size may not accommodate larger portafilters without additional accessories.

Price Point:  Priced at approximately $129, it may be considered expensive compared to other coffee scales.

Thoughts

The Bookoo Mini is the best travel scale I've used—and the asterisk matters. It's the best because of its design, portability, and data connectivity. It's not the best because of durability (unproven), app stability (flaky), or value (expensive).

Buy it if:

  • You're serious enough about coffee to track extraction, but travel enough to care about weight
  • Design matters to you—and I mean genuinely, not as an afterthought
  • You can tolerate Bluetooth quirks

Skip it if:

  • You just need a reliable scale (get the Timemore)
  • You're a data obsessive and need rock-solid app performance (get the Lunar)
  • You're traveling ultra-light and $129+ feels excessive

After six months? I'm keeping it. Because perfect doesn't exist at this weight and price. This gets close enough that I forgive the flaws.
