THE VERDICT ★★★★ — 4/5

Best For: Coffee brewers who travel frequently and do not want to sacrifice their coffee. Perfect for campers, hikers, backpackers and commuters.

Price $40 (The Exaflow lid is an additional $15)

Bottom Line: After testing multiple set-ups for travel, this is hands down the best option I have come up with for filter-coffee lovers.

The lids are interchangable between the cups.

Coffee brewing on the go is problematic.

If you want a clean, juicy extraction while living out of a backpack, you are usually forced to carry 5KG of drippers, carafes, goose-neck kettles, grinders, and a dedicated travel mug. By the time you pack it all, your travel bag is at capacity with just your coffee stash.

The Wacaco Cuppamoka solves this headache by fitting a coffee-brewing eco-system into a simple thermos mug. Ok, so it's not THAT simple, but.

Instead of multiple moving parts rattling around in your bag, the Cuppamoka uses an integrated, pop-up dropper system that stays completely hidden within the cup until you need it. Tipping the scales at 430 grams, it feels solid without adding dead weight, blending a minimalist aesthetic with an incredibly functional approach to mobile coffee brewing.

Running on regular Hario or Cafec paper filters, means you'll be able to stock up in any supermarket or specialty shop on the road.

Who Are WACACO?

Wacaco are known for engineering some of the most innovative off-grid brewing gear on the planet. They originally built their reputation pushing the boundaries of what manual espresso hand-pumps could achieve with devices like the Nanopresso and the Picopresso.

Their design philosophy rejects the idea that traveling light means drinking muddy, murky coffee.

For the nomad minimalist, Wacaco is an answered prayer. Their entire catalog is designed around space-saving habits, light-weight gear, and mechanical reliability. They don't build dainty drippers; they build rugged gear for people who want to brew a beautiful Sudan Rume on a remote mountain trail, a bumpy Balkan bus, or a cramped airport terminal without sacrificing a single drop of character.

WHAT IS THE CUPPAMOKA?

The Wacaco Cuppamoka is an all-in-one portable pour-over coffee dripper and vacuum-insulated travel mug. Built using heavy-duty, BPA-free plastic and premium 304 stainless steel, the system centers around a 10 fl oz (300ml) double-walled mug that keeps your brew hot for hours. Directly inside the rim is a clever, cone-shaped dripper designed to hold standard 01 or 02 paper filters.

With a simple twist of the outer ring, the hidden dripper automatically rises out of the cup, expanding into a stable, overhead pour-over station. You brew your coffee directly through the cone into the insulated chamber below. Once the extraction is complete, another quick twist drops the spent dripper back down into the sleeve, allowing you to pop the leak-proof drinking lid on and walk away without dealing with a dripping, separate plastic cone.

Watch how to use the Cuppamoka.

WHAT IS THE EXAFLOW?

While the standard Cuppamoka setup is excellent, Wacaco quietly fixed the ongoing issue of gooseneck kettles on the go: the Exaflow lid. Originally designed to screw onto their Octaroma cups, this push-button insulation lid fits the Cuppamoka thread perfectly. For travelers, this is an absolute revelation because it integrates a dual-pouring mechanism directly into your drinking lid. You can pour presise through the spout, and sip your coffee or water through the back part that flips up and down.

One of the biggest set-backs of a life on the road is the question of the kettle. Do you pack a space-demanding and fragile pourover kettle? Do you struggle to pour a steady flow with alternating hotel kettles, meeting a new challenge everytime you change hotels? Now you don't have to worry anymore.

By clicking the push-button to the open position, you unlock a spout on one side. This means if you are stuck in a hotel room or a campsite with nothing but a clumsy, wide-mouth electric water kettle, you can fill your Octaroma mug with boiling water, screw the Exaflow lid on, and use it as a highly accurate, slow-streaming gooseneck kettle to pour over your Cuppamoka to brew your coffee. It completely eliminates the need to pack a separate travel pouring pitcher, streamlining your entire pour-over kit down to just the Cuppamoka, the Octaroma with Exaflow lid, and a hand grinder.

The Positives

  • The all-in-one design is exceptionally efficient, packing a double-walled mug, an expandable dripper cone, and a leak-proof lid into a singular, highly packable footprint. It feels solid and can withstand being thrown into a backpack.

  • The twisting pop-up mechanism is satisfyingly smooth and completely stable, holding its position effortlessly even when holding full water weight during a multi-stage pour.

  • Thermal performance from the 304 stainless steel vacuum insulation is outstanding, keeping your brewed specialty coffee piping hot for up to three hours on the move.

  • Cleanup is simple because it uses clean paper filters, you simply lift the paper out and toss it, dropping the dry dripper back into the sleeve after a rinse, without dealing with sludge.

  • When paired with the optional Exaflow lid, the unit serves double-duty as a precision gooseneck kettle alternative, stripping massive bulk out of a mobile travel kit.

  • The stream on the Exaflow lid runs between 4-6 ml per second flow-rate, so that is pretty perfect for light-roast coffees that don't need aggressive agitation.

The Negatives

  • The 300ml maximum capacity is strictly limited to single-serve extractions, meaning you cannot easily brew large batches to share with a travel partner. There is a work-around if you purchase the larger Octaroma cup.

  • The proprietary paper filters have a unique cone geometry; while you can fold down standard V60 papers they do not fit perfectly, so it takes a bit of folding practice to nail, or you get a bit of a bulge on the sides.

  • The hidden, twisting mechanical track inside the sleeve requires a thorough rinse if you accidentally overfill the mug and cause coffee to splash into the internal housing.

  • The Exaflow lid needs to be pushed down before attempting to screw onto a cup filled with hot water or the pressure will not allow it to be deployed. It also will leak if you try to tip it too far forward, so stick to a 90 degree angle, and you'll be golden.

Final Thoughts

The Wacaco Cuppamoka is a smart piece of travel gear that understands the needs of the nomad minimalist. It avoids the muddy, gritty extractions of AeroPress or French Press by sticking to a clean paper-filter pour-over workflow, ensuring your coffee tastes vibrant and juicy no matter where you are brewing.

It is rugged, feels premium, and looks stylish. By combining the brewer and the thermal mug into a single device (and adding precision pouring via the Exaflow lid) Wacaco has delivered the ultimate travel companions for anyone living out of a backpack.

We honestly think the Cuppamoka & the Exaflow lid is one of the smartest duo-accessories to hit the market in a long time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What type of filters does the Cuppamoka use?

Apart from the filters it ships with, use any regular V60 filters. You might have to fold them a bit differently, but they work great.

How long does the double-walled mug keep coffee hot?

The Cuppamoka keeps your coffee hot for roughly 2 to 3 hours with the standard lid attached. Upgrading to the Exaflow lid will give you a 4-hour window.

Can you use the Cuppamoka mug as a kettle with the Exaflow lid?

Yes. The Exaflow lid features a specialized dual-spout system with a narrow, precision aperture. By filling the stainless steel mug with hot water and attaching the Exaflow lid, you can tilt the vessel to produce a slow, highly controlled, splash-free stream that perfectly mimics the flow rate of a dedicated gooseneck travel kettle.

Is the entire Cuppamoka system dishwasher safe?

No. Hand wash with mild detergent.
