TIMEMORE WHIRLY 01S
BENJAMIN SAND
Timemore launched the Millab a couple of years ago, changing the game with its amazing portability and grind quality. Now they are back with a lighter, cheaper model that will appeal to a new crowd.
The Whirly is a bargain at under $200 for a rechargable, electric grinder, and thankfully it does not come with ceramic burrs. The design is very striking, modern and sleek, and the fact that there is no lid makes it one less thing to lose on a trip. The twist-up top is fantastic, allowing you to dose your beans, twist it back down again, and that prevents pop-corning. Win-win!
I have used the Whirly for 2 months, travelling, and at home. Here are the things I enjoyed about it, and the negatives.
Who is Timemore?
Timemore is a forward-thinking Chinese company that has quickly earned a respected place among the world’s leading coffee equipment makers. Founded with a vision to blend precision engineering, beautiful design, and everyday usability, Timemore now offers a wide family of products — from award-winning hand grinders to elegant pour-over brewers, kettles, and scales.
What makes Timemore truly remarkable is how they consistently achieve harmony between craftsmanship, functionality, and price. Their grinders, for example, deliver performance and consistency on par with much more expensive competitors, while their attention to design aesthetics sets them apart in the market.
It is rare to see a brand that so naturally combines innovation with accessibility, and Timemore has managed to create that balance in a way that continues to impress coffee lovers around the globe.
The Positives
Versatile Grind Settings: Offers precise adjustments (0.025mm increments) suitable for various brewing methods, including espresso and pour-over.
Compact & Lightweight: Weighs just 760g, making it highly portable for travel or outdoor use.
Efficient Performance: The 60W motor grinds 20g of coffee for espresso in approximately 90 seconds and 15g for pour-over in about 30 seconds.
Battery Life: The 7.4Wh battery charges in 3 hours and supports up to 20 espresso shots or 35 pour-over servings per charge.
User-Friendly Design: Features an innovative swivel hopper that clicks into place, reducing mess and ensuring proper bean alignment.
The Negatives
Grind Size Calibration: The factory-recommended grind settings can be a bit off, requiring manual adjustments.
Limited Capacity: The hopper may require multiple batches for larger brewing sessions.
Price Point: It's more expensive than a manual grinder, something to consider.
Battery: Even tho the battery life is acceptable, the Millab is far better.
Grind Size:
Better for espresso, not so suited for pour-over. If you do not use RDT, then the burrs and catch-cup get covered in static and fines.
Catch-Cup: This can at times be tricky to allign.
Thoughts
A good cheaper alternative to the Millab, but we feel if you're going to spend the money on a portable grinder, get the Millab for a better battery life and build quality.
For people who care about weight, then this is slightly lighter than the EO1, so it's definitely worth considering. The one main thing I encountered with using it regularly, was that if I brew 2-3 cups of filter coffee per day, I had to charge it quite often. The Millab would go for almost a month between charges, which is exceptional.
