WONG KAR WAI VIBES IN THIS HIDDEN SPEAKEASY
In The Mood For Love has been referenced to within an inch of its life, but the truth remains: It was ground-breaking. The way in which Wong Kar Wai balanced seduction, beauty, timelessness and memory without resorting to saccharine sentimentality or obvious story arcs.
From within this temple of the mind, comes Shuang Xi. A speakeasy of sorts, located up a narrow staircase in Chinatown, KL.
Home to punks, poets and wanderers, this hidden gem perfumes the neighborhood with vibes of other realms. The seating is mostly on the floor, shoes are left at the top of the staircase, the walls adorned with posters of legendary films like Made In Hong Kong, Happy Together, and (oddly enough) Independence Day. We assume this is some sort of inside joke.
The drink menu has options for the sober crowd, beer, and also creative blends like Sweet Dream, Linger Ginger, Familiar Stranger, and the Hong Kong cinema–inspired Happy Together (chrysanthemum gin with dates, longan, lemon) and He Mu Zi (pandan gin cocktail).
In a city known for soulless glossy rooftops and ex-pat sports bars, Shuang Xi positions itself as raw, creative, and unpretentious— a place where storytelling, grassroots culture, and drinks meet in imperfect harmony.
Entrance is up a staircase behind a door, you'll find it!
