SUBMINIMAL NANOFOAMER V2
BENJAMIN SAND
Anyone who drinks milk-based coffee will know the pain of creating good foam on the go. Without having to bring an entire espresso machine with you, or relying on one of the cheap hand-foamers on Amazon, the process can be quite exhausting. Either you're dragging around far too much weight, or your milk has a ton of large bubbles but no texture.
Is there a solution?
With the launch of the Subminimal Nanofoamer V2, there is. A company that also revolutionised the bean weighing game with their delightful
Subscale, have made a portable foamer that actually produces results.
Who Are Subminimal?
Subminimal is a boutique Singaporean brand known for blending minimalistic design with everyday coffee gear. They produce tools like the Subscale and NanoFoamer, prioritizing intuitive, visually striking products that are minimalist in design and do what they say on the tin. Their gear tends to be lightweight, sleek, and crafted for form and function, leaning into that “wow” moment in your daily brew routine.
They have obviously identified some gaps in the market that people refer to regularly, and attempted to bridge the gap. The scale-conundrum, and also the fact that home-brewers find it increasingly difficult to make quality milk foam without an espresso wand/maker.
What is the Nanofoamer V2?
The Subminimal NanoFoamer V2 is a handheld, battery-powered milk foamer designed to create true microfoam — the fine, glossy, paint-like milk texture typically achieved with a commercial steam wand. Unlike standard frothers that whip air into milk and produce stiff foam, the NanoFoamer V2 focuses on emulsifying milk properly, breaking bubbles down to a microscopic level so the milk integrates smoothly with espresso.
At its core, the NanoFoamer V2 uses a high-speed motor paired with interchangeable NanoScreens (fine and superfine mesh discs). These screens control bubble size and density, allowing users to tailor texture depending on the drink — from tight, latte-art-ready milk to slightly more open foam for cappuccinos.
The V2 iteration improves on earlier versions with a more robust stainless-steel motor housing, replaceable parts, and a simplified on/off switch. It doesn’t heat milk on its own — milk must be warmed separately — but that separation is intentional. By removing heating from the equation, Subminimal keeps the tool compact, affordable, and focused purely on texture.
The Nanofoamer V2 is perfect for:
- Home baristas who want microfoam quality rather than airy froth.
- Espresso enthusiasts without a steam wand.
- People with limited countertop space or those who travel but still want quality milk texture.
It’s not ideal if you prefer an all-in-one electric frother with heating, or if you need precise control over temperature and foam density without manual technique.
Interchangeable mesh screens
The Positives
- Barista-level microfoam: produces very fine, café-quality texture with practice.
- Light and portable: no cords, minimal footprint.
- Easy to clean: waterproof design rinses quickly after use.
- Replaceable parts and upgradeable screens: longer life cycle than throwaway frothers.
The Negatives
- Technique required: doesn’t heat milk; you must warm first and then foam. It takes a while to master the technique as it needs a wide-based jug to foam correctly in, so a person using their morning tall-cup is going to experience a messy wake-up call.
- Mixed durability anecdotes: some users report wobbling or impeller issues long-term. This is pooled from research we did online on review sites, so take it with a pint of salt.
- Not all plant milks behave equally: some barista alternatives still struggle.
Tips
The NanoFoamer V2 Lithium is capable of genuinely excellent microfoam, but like a steam wand, results depend heavily on technique. These tips will help you get the best texture consistently.
- The NanoFoamer does not heat milk. For best results, heat milk to roughly 55–65°C before foaming. Below this range, foam forms slowly and inconsistently; above it, milk loses sweetness and structure.
- A simple rule: heat until the milk is just too hot to comfortably hold your pitcher for more than a second.
The V2 Lithium comes with multiple NanoScreens — use them intentionally:
- Superfine screen: best for latte art and glossy, tight microfoam
- Fine screen: slightly more volume, better for cappuccinos or flat whites with more body.
- If foam feels too stiff or bubbly, switch to a finer screen or reduce air introduction time.
Think like a barista:
- Phase 1 (aeration): keep the foamer just below the surface for 2–3 seconds to introduce air.
- Phase 2 (texturing): fully submerge the screen and let the milk roll until smooth.
- Rushing the first phase leads to flat milk; overdoing it leads to dry foam.
- The Lithium version has more consistent torque than battery AA models — don’t force it. Keep your grip light and let the screen spin freely. Forcing the wand against the pitcher wall reduces efficiency and creates uneven foam.
- A small milk pitcher (300–450 ml) gives better control. Too much milk in a large jug makes it harder to maintain a proper vortex and evenly distribute microbubbles.
- Barista-style oat and soy work best. Almond and coconut tend to foam lighter and looser.
- Use slightly higher temperatures.
- Always use the superfine screen for plant milks.
Finish Like a Pro:
- After foaming, tap the pitcher gently on the counter. Swirl firmly until the milk looks glossy and uniform. If the milk pours like wet paint, you’re there.
Our first try was a disaster, but after a few trial runs we got a better result.
Final Thoughts
For what it is, a budget-friendly, handheld tool that transforms everyday milk into microfoam, the Subminimal Nanofoamer V2 punches above its weight. It’s not a magic wand, and it doesn’t replace a steam wand, but for aspiring home baristas who want café texture without an espresso machine’s cost or counter space, it’s a tidy little piece of gear that delivers.
If you want the easiest possible experience with more power and flexibility, consider the rechargeable NanoFoamer Lithum. And if you want full electric operation with more control, the NanoFoamer PRO Gen2 is the premium step up.
