GOOSE DELI
IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE-LY PASTRIES
Crossing the road over to Goose, I didn't know what to expect. A bakery/deli melding Asian accents with traditional Danish staples? Would it be a Scandinavian-ised Cha chaan teng? A full blown bakery billowing flour? A hip hideout with comforting treats?
Entering the door, perhaps its a mixture of all three. The decor is minimal and clean, but not cold. Large windows cut graphic lines on the tiled walls. The retail shelves look resplendent in sunlight.
Greeted by an extremely friendly host, explained a few details about the coffee and menu, left to our own devices to mull them over, ordered, took some photos, found a beautiful table flooded in November sun. Everything was served almost immediately, and we fumbled to attack.

The coffee was brewed by Mood in Århus, and was an Anaerobic. The pastries were a spandauer with black sesame, and a bun hit with five spice, but not in a way that turned it too fragrant or savoury, but not an insignificant amount either. The pretty much perfect pinch.

They sell a selection of products along the wall, tote bags, coffee (pick up a bag of Sensei if you get the chance), and do a round of sandwiches and more filling morsels should you have a hunger greater than a spandauer will fill.

It's really rare these days to eat flavour combinations that one hasn't had a million times before, but this was one of those days. Having spent most of my life in Asia, the pastry selections there tend to stick super local traditional (read overly sweet 99% of the time), or try to make identical versions of French and other classic sweets.
Taking a few nuances of the East and folding it into something approachable and recognisable, but yet challenging a persons palate at the same time, is a delicious twist. One thing that stood out was the lack of over-reliance on sugar. Sweetness is a lovely thing to notice, but not in excess, and the balance of flavours here were right on the money.
I'll be back for sure, and will dig deeper into their menu, and I suggest those who haven't been, to hop on a bike and head over.
Closed Tue & Wed. Open the rest.
