SLOWMOV - BARCELONA

OG'S STILL GRINDING

Each year a few new specialty coffee shops open up, dragging with them a few regulars from other spots on the peripheries. Invariably, they get bored and return to their loyal purveyors, but sometimes it creates turbulence in the air. The need to constantly stick to your principals during trend shifts and hype, is a character trait we all should admire.

Slowmov has bucked the trend and stuck to their guns.

This is everything you want from a neighborhood cafe. Friendly service, coffee roasted around the corner, knowledgable staff, minimalist clean vibes, no noisy music, pastries and plates, a couple of spots outside if the suns kind.

We tasted two batch brews (one kindly provided as a tasting sample), and both were sweet and well balanced in their own right. The scene in Barcelona seems at ends with itself, trying frantically to appear as hip and cool as possible, but trying to keep prices acceptable for the local crowd too.

It's a delicate balance.

Slowmov are more of an old-skool leaning crew. Content with their place in the eco-system, however fragile that can be. To create a coffee shop people want to return to, to have as part of a daily ritual, and to know the consistency is going to shine, you've won half the battle if you nail this.

In our experience those that stick to their guns and ride the wave usually end up ok in the end. There may be some tricky situations to navigate, but time shines kindly on people with purpose and passion.

If you've been around for more than a decade, you're doing something right.

Hidden beneath a pile of graffiti laden walls, lies this tiny Thai kiosk. You won't get the best meal of your life here, but there are plenty worse places in Helsinki.
