BEST LAKSA IN KL

THE PERSONAL PREFERENCE SHITLIST

Laksa is like a love-affair in a bowl. So many competing elements, everything gets tangled, spicy and silky. If done right it can be right up there with the best bowl of Ramen, Pho or Thukpa. However, personal taste prevails and the fishier Asam Laksa are not included in this article.

No, this is an homage to the mighty Curry Mee / Nyonya Laksa, the jam packed bowl of deliciousness that transports your mind to calmer pastures. From a couple of chain restaurants churning out suprisingly tasty bowls, to the rat infested heatmaps of Madras Lane, we scoured high and low to find bowls that would satisfy even the most demanding Laksa-phile.

Here below are our five favourite authentic Laksa in Kuala Lumpur, in no particular order:

Limapulo Baba Can Cook nyonya laksa.

LIMAPULO

Bestowed recently with the honour of a Michelin Bib Gourmand, this local favourite near Chowkit has been a pillar in the community for consistency and excellence.

OLD CHINA CAFE

Despite having the most achingly beautiful interiors, The Old China Cafe knocks out one heck of a Nyonya Laksa. Seek refuge in here from the Instagram hordes a few alleys down, and pray it doesn't become a Tik Tok hot-spot.

Madras Lane Curry Laksa KL

MADRAS LANE CURRY LAKSA

Hotter than a barbeque at satans 666th birthday, this alleyway in Chinatown is home to what Lonely Planet named one of the top eating experiences on earth. On that point we can't really argue because this curry mee is dynamite.

Tip: Go to the stall with the GREEN bowls, don't get swindled into eating at the wrong one.

Laksa from Ali Muthu and Ah Hock in KL

LUM KEE LAKSA

Walking into the food court at Seksyen 14 is like literally entering a time-capsule to the 1950's. The stalls are achingly ornate in that retro kitsch vibe without even knowing what it means. Preservation has stood the test of time, and the uncles cooking Laksa at this stall have been doing so for 45 years. The curry laksa here is thinner, less creamy but still has a good amount of coconut milk in it. The vibes are sensational and everyone should just order a bowl and have a private moment on their own in this majestic old skool cathedral to food.

Laksa from Nyonya Tingkat at KL Sentral

NYONYA TINGKAT

Another example of good food at a shopping mall, Nyonya Tingkat (One floor above Nyonya Colours), serves up a solid bowl of Laksa from a suspiciously sparse kitchen. We don't really know HOW they make it, but they damn well do a good job.

Food is forever evolving, and sometimes it devolves. Owners change, locations change, chefs change. We can only assure you that when we visited, we liked it.
