INTRODUCTION

My personal experience in portable projectors has been hit and miss. The first purchase I made was for an Asus Zenbeam, a projector that almost turned me off the genre for life. I brought it back to the store 3 times and in the end had to swap it for an Anker Nebula. The Nebula served me well, but the lack of projecting at a side angle, and the incredibly frustrating start-up times made me use it less and less.

The following 2 projectors I got were both by Aurzen. A brand that takes their craft seriously, and I was actually happy with both their offerings. The mix of size and performance was what I was looking for, although the resolution on the smaller ZIP was not up to scratch for larger screen viewings. That was a definitely choice between portability and image quality.

This time around, I decided to try the Wanbo Cube 2S, a projector that clothed its form well, and sat smartly on any counter.

USING THE CUBE 2S

Using the Cube 2S on a daily basis highlights its biggest selling point: the system turns on from cold in roughly 12 seconds, while snapping back to life from standby in a mere 1.5 seconds. There is virtually zero waiting around; you press the power button on the remote, and you are instantly on your streaming dashboard ready to hit play. Unlike my predecessors, that took upwards of a minute to boot, and several laggy seconds to return to menus.

Nighttime performance is where this little box genuinely shines. In a dimmed or pitch-black room, the 500 ANSI lumens combined with HDR10 decoding render deep blacks, rich contrast, and vivid color reproduction that look phenomenal for a projector in this price category. An added bonus to this design is the fact the menu overlays on the screen, so you can adjust focus or sound without having to exit your film and fiddle around in the menu. This is a true game-changer.

However, getting the ideal image requires a little trickery. While the auto-focus and auto-keystone snap into place quickly, if you project even slightly from the side, the angle causes visible text softness along the far edges away from the tilt axis. If you keep the projector positioned relatively straight on facing your wall or ceiling, the native 1080p resolution stays sharp across the entire frame.

The Negatives

• Projecting from sharp side angles leaves slight text blurriness on the far edges away from the tilt; keeping it dead-straight is required for edge-to-edge text crispness.

• The 8W internal speaker struggles with low volume and shallow bass, meaning an external Bluetooth speaker or soundbar is essential for movie nights. The sound is not bad at all, but can come across slightly "tinny". So if you want deeper tones, then connect your home system.

• I wish it ran on USB-C to get rid of endless cable exchanges.

• While stellar at night, 500 ANSI lumens is not bright enough to battle direct daytime sunlight in a bright room. You can't really expect a projector at this price-point to be viewable in daytime, so I'm nitpicking here.

The Wanbo Cube 2S (VIDAA OS Edition) is a versatile, above average budget projector. The system works flawlessly, the menu is highly intuitive, the picture is fantastic and the sound is good. By prioritizing near-instant startup times, smooth OS navigation, and a versatile 230-degree gimbal design, Wanbo has eliminated the usual friction points of portable cinema setups.

It isn't without its budget trade-offs. You will definitely want to pair it with an external Bluetooth speaker for punchy sound, and you'll want to place it fairly straight on to avoid off-axis edge blur. But if you want a stylish, lightning-fast bedside or travel projector that turns any dark room into a home theater, the Cube 2S delivers incredible value for the money.
