Bottom Line: If you're looking for an espresso tray scale, this is the holy grail.

INTRODUCTION

I must have reviewed and tested over 20 scales in my time, and usually the middle-ground is a trade-off between size and features. If you want a fully stacked scale you're usually not going to be able to fit it between the legs of a Flair, if you want something more basic the scale probably won't capture your espresso shot readings accurately. Should your poison be V60 brews, then many scales are too small to fit a server and read the display at the same time. Ikape are not trying to be a one-stop-solution. They decided to take on the espresso scale market, and build something that you won't feel worried about leaving on a driptray. This thing is solid.

Instead of risking another fragile plastic box in your setup, IKAPE machined this tiny scale straight from aluminum alloy. The goal is straightforward: flow tracking, accuracy, and high-end aesthetic weight, small enough to fit under a portafilter, and yet below the triple-digit pricepoint of so many competitor scales.

Who IS IKAPE?

IKAPE is a specialty espresso gear manufacturer that built its reputation by flooding the market with heavy-duty baristas' essentials—ranging from spring-loaded calibrated tampers and WDT distribution tools to precision portafilters and knock boxes.

Their core focus centres on providing precision, industrial-grade aluminum and stainless steel accessories for espresso enthusiasts who want clean design and heavy tactile feel without paying boutique European or domestic premiums.

USING the V3

In daily workflow, the IKAPE Smart Scale 3 feels dense and remarkably well-proportioned for tight setups. It has a weight to it that speaks of quality, not nuisance. The single-piece body gives it a satisfying, tactile grip when moving it around your counter, while its low height fits easily under bottomless portafilters on compact machines like the De'Longhi Dedica, Flair, or Cafelat Robot.

The glass surface cleans up easily from accidental drips, and the scale turns on quickly. Navigating between modes requires cycling through the touch interface:

  • P1 Mode (Pour-Over): Tracks water weight and timing automatically as you pour.
  • P2 Mode (Ratio Mode): Calculates real-time powder-to-water ratios on top of timer and weight metrics.
  • E Mode (Espresso Auto-Mode): Detects your cup, auto-tares instantly, and triggers the timer the second espresso drops hit the glass.
  • Real-Time Stability Line: A visual indicator across the display that tracks flow consistency, giving you immediate feedback on pour-over flow rate or shot stability.

Sensor responsiveness is very fast and accurate down to 0.1g, making single-dosing beans or stopping an espresso shot on target effortless. The scale is perhaps on the small size for V60 brewing, but if you brew into a cup or thinner vessel, you should be able to balance the cup and see the screen at the same time.

Watch 'Bens Coffee Rants' experience with the scale.

The Positives

  • Solid CNC Build: One-piece aluminum body and glass top feel remarkably premium and far sturdier than plastic competitors.

  • Ultra-Compact Footprint: Fits under almost any drip tray with plenty of clearance for tall glassware or portafilters.

  • Auto-Tare & Auto-Timer (E Mode): Espresso auto-mode works reliably, taring your cup instantly and timing extraction without manual button presses.

  • Visual Stability Line: Offers real-time feedback on pour stability, helping you refine water flow consistency during manual pour-overs.

  • 0.1g High Precision: Fast sampling rate with solid repeatability for both dosing whole beans and measuring liquid output.

The Negatives

  • Confusing Box Labeling: Due to a factory printing error, many V3 units ship inside boxes marked "V2 Coffee Scale." (Check for the ribbed aluminum edges to confirm you have the true V3).

  • Glass Top Fingerprint Magnet: The dark mirror glass surface looks striking when clean but collects smudges and coffee dust rapidly.

  • Touch Screen Sensitivity: Touch controls can occasionally trigger accidentally if wet fingertips brush the edges.

  • Convoluted Mode Switching: Toggling through P1, P2, and E modes requires getting used to double-taps and specific touch button sequences.

Final Thoughts

The IKAPE V3 punches well above its weight class in terms of design and materials. If you are tired of flimsy plastic scales flexing on your drip tray, its single-piece CNC aluminum chassis and glass mirror finish deliver an upscale, tactile experience that looks right at home beside high-end espresso setups.

While the touch interface has a slight learning curve and the box labeling mix-up can cause initial confusion, its 0.1g accuracy, instant auto-tare espresso mode, and compact footprint make it an exceptional tool for precision-minded home baristas and traveling nomads. It fits in your pocket, but it packs a punch!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Why does my product box say V2 when I ordered the V3 / Smart Scale 3?

A: Due to a manufacturer printing error on early packaging batches, several IKAPE Smart Scale 3 units ship inside boxes labeled "V2." You can easily verify you received the upgraded V3 model by checking the physical chassis: the V3 features a full CNC aluminum alloy mini body with ribbed outer edges and a glass mirror top.

Q: How does the Espresso Mode work on the IKAPE Scale 3?

A: Double-click the left button until "E" displays on the screen. Place your espresso cup on the glass platform; the scale auto-tares the cup weight automatically to zero. As soon as the first drops of espresso hit the cup, the timer starts automatically and tracks liquid weight until extraction stops.

Q: What is the Real-Time Stability Line on the display?

A: The stability line is a visual flow indicator on the LED display. During pour-over or espresso brewing, the line reacts dynamically to changes in liquid flow rate, allowing you to monitor water distribution stability and maintain a steady pour.

Q: Is the glass surface of the IKAPE scale waterproof?

A: The glass top and aluminum casing are splash-resistant and wipe clean easily with a microfibre cloth. However, the scale is not fully submersible, so avoid running water directly over the charging port or side gaps.
